2nd NEWSLETTER
The LIFE DIANA project has started prosperously and this 2nd newsletter focuses on the 1st year’s technical and dissemination outputs. In the framework of the LIFE DIANA project, the key idea is that the petroleum refinery sludges (PRS), resulting from crude oil refining, will be stabilized with industrial minerals and then re-used in other application.
LAB-SCALE STABILIZATION EXPERIMENTS
LIFE DIANA is the result of long term research activities of the Laboratory of Metallurgy of the School of Mining and Metallurgical Engineering of NTUA. In the framework of the project, more and focused lab-scale experiments determined the exact stabilization process of PRS with the use of specific industrial materials. Initially, during those lab-scale experiments, all PRS samples and industrial minerals were physio-chemically characterized and categorized following their properties. The performance of the various industrial mineral qualities were evaluated, among other parameters, by comparing their sorption stability and capacity. After having determined the PRS exact composition and raw materials properties, the lab-scale experiments defined the operational conditions of the integrated stabilization process (feeding rate, temperatures etc.) that transform PRS to a Valorized Sludge Mixture (VSM), and then to Engineered Soil. The Engineered Soil may be finally used for the construction and restoration of landfills and quarries.
LIFE DIANA MEETINGS
THE KICK-OFF
The kick-off meeting of LIFE DIANA took place on 12.07.2017 at MOH Corinth Refineries with the presence of all project partners and the external monitor from NEEMO. The meeting mainly focused on presenting all actions and timetable by highlighting the role and responsibilities of each partner. NEEMO external monitoring expert presented LIFE projects management, communication and dissemination procedures.
EU LIFE16 ENV PROJECTS KICK-OFF
The LIFE DIANA project participated in the EU LIFE16 ENV projects kick-off on the 17-18.10.2017 in Brussels.
LIFE DIANA was presented to all participants. It was also a great opportunity to network with similar projects and receive guidance on project management and dissemination best practices.
PERLITE INSTITUTION MEETING
NTUA participated in the Annual meeting of the Perlite Institution on the 8-11.11.2017 where LIFE DIANA was presented and fruitful information exchange, about the use of perlite in stabilization process, took place.
NEEMO PROJECT VISIT
The LIFE DIANA 1st NEEMO Meeting was organized by NTUA and was held on the 2.04.2018 at NTUA premises at Zografou. All partners attended the meeting with the presence of NEEMO.
All actions, deliverables and an overview of the technical and financial project’s progress were presented and discussed. The highlight of the meeting was the guided tour across the laboratories of NTUA where the participants got the chance to see the relevant equipment and to be informed about the role of NTUA in the LIFE DIANA project.
